Streaming and recording video from HomeView
Settings discovered in HomeView software 27.2 show settings to use the built-in camera for both streaming and recording.
- Off
Your HomeView will not detect motion, stream, or record. Home members will not be able to stream in real-time.
- Detect Activity
HomeView will detect motion, but will not stream or record. Home members will not be able to stream in real-time.
- Stream
Home members will be able to stream in real-time, but your HomeView will not record.
- Stream & Allow Recording
Your HomeView will stream and record. Home members will be able to stream in real-time and view recordings.
Either streaming or recording can be set to activate when you’re home, when you’re away, or when you’re asleep.
Strong privacy protections
As we’d expect from Apple, there are very strong privacy protections for the feature. An indicator light appears on the display when the security camera feature is in use, along with a sound to indicate that streaming or recording has begun. Members of the home also receive a notification.
Additionally, if any home members are in the home, then the security camera feature cannot be remotely activated, only from HomeView itself. This seems likely intended to prevent domestic abusers from spying on their partner.
9to5Mac’s Take
This seems a worthwhile addition to the functionality, and could potentially influence the perceived value of HomeView for anyone on the fence about buying one. The privacy protections are first rate.
