SK Hynix Posts Record Q3 Revenue and Warns Chip Shortage May Last Until 2030

SK Hynix reported a historic third-quarter revenue of 104.6 trillion won alongside an 80 percent operating profit margin, driven by surging demand for AI memory solutions like HBM4 and DDR5. However, the company warns that the global memory chip supply shortage could persist until 2030, fueled by growing demands from artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous systems.

South Korean semiconductor giant SK Hynix has announced a stellar financial performance for the third quarter, surpassing 100 trillion won in quarterly revenue for the first time in its history. According to the published data, total revenue reached 104.6 trillion won, resulting in an operating profit of 83.3 trillion won and a net profit of 39.8 trillion won. This highlights an operating profit margin of 80 percent and a net profit margin of 38 percent.

Cash and cash equivalents at the end of the quarter reached 114.5 trillion won, marking an increase of 26.5 trillion won from the previous quarter. Meanwhile, borrowings decreased by 2.8 trillion won to 15.8 trillion won, bringing net liquidity to 98.7 trillion won.

The explosive growth in sales of high-priced HBM4 modules for servers played a significant role in generating this revenue. Executives predict that in the upcoming quarter, HBM4 modules will surpass HBM3E in supply volume and revenue, becoming the primary product line.

At the same time, increasing demand for server DDR5 RAM and LPDDR5 SOCAMM components tailored for AI servers has transformed the market. The company's new M15X factory is scheduled to reach its maximum monthly production capacity of 55,000 to 50,000 DRAM chip wafers by the end of the year, while the share of next-generation DRAM is rapidly growing.

In the storage sector, the production of 321-layer TLC chips for SSDs has peaked, covering more than half of domestic production capacity in South Korea. Designers are also working on high-bandwidth flash memory technology known as HBF, which is utilized for better streaming of heavy data for AI models.

Despite these staggering financial achievements, the official statement indicates that the global memory chip supply shortage will likely persist until 2030. This challenge is expected to be driven in the short term by artificial intelligence and in the long term by robotics and autonomous systems.
