There was a time when phones with 6-inch displays were considered “phablets,” and while I wouldn’t necessarily want to go back to smartphones with super-tiny displays, plenty of people would actually prefer a small, sub-6-inch phone, as we also saw in a recent Android Authority poll. Well, if you weren’t put off by the constant reminders that small phones aren’t doing too well, or by reports that manufacturers aren’t interested in them anymore, there’s some good news for you at long last.
A new Kickstarter campaign is kicking off today (pun intended) for the “enough” phone: a smartphone that will be tiny by today’s standards. It’s built around a 5.3-inch LCD panel with a 1,520 x 720-pixel resolution, because the makers think that’s the perfect size for optimal performance, 5G compatibility, and portability.
The phone will be 133mm tall, which should be comfortable enough for single-handed use, and will likely earn my colleague Hadlee’s seal of approval for a small phone with a comfortable size.
Despite that genuinely small build (it’s nearly the same size as an iPhone 13 mini), the enough phone offers fairly decent specs. The team at enough has decided on the Dimensity 7500 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage. The Dimensity 7500 is a 4nm mid-range chipset from earlier this year that should perform quite well while also not being too power-hungry — a core requirement for a compact phone with a small battery.
Speaking of the battery, enough has been working towards a target capacity of 3,500mAh. However, the company says the final spec is still undecided, so it could change for better or worse (hopefully the former). The battery will be user-replaceable, which could help with device longevity and help it stand out against a crowd of flagship phones with non-user-replaceable batteries.
It’s unclear whether the company plans to use a silicon-carbon battery for the enough phone. It really should, because switching to silicon-carbon tech might let it offer a higher capacity without physically increasing its size. We’ll just have to wait and see on that.
Other specs include a 50MP Sony IMX766 rear camera, a 32MP front camera, a fingerprint reader built into the power button, camera-based face unlock, 5G, eSIM, and NFC support.
The enough phone will also give you the option of running either Android 17 or a stripped-down, dumbphone-like OdysseyOS. The phone makers are also targeting five years of software updates, so you should get Android updates until 2032.
You can reserve your enough phone by grabbing the super-early-bird offer of $399. Regular early-bird pricing is set at $449, and general project backers can reserve their phone for $499. The company says that the final retail price of the enough phone is planned to be $599. Shipments should get underway in May of next year.
