The end is near for Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro, but there's a silver lining

- Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro will stop receiving OS updates after March 2027, with security updates continuing until the end of 2027.

- Developers can still update existing games, but must give players six months’ notice before ending support.

If you own a Meta Quest 2 or Quest Pro, you may have some bad news. Meta is preparing to wind down software support for both VR headsets, with the final operating system updates scheduled for March 2027. But before you start wondering whether it’s time to retire your headset, there’s something worth knowing: your Quest isn’t going to become useless.

According to a recent announcement on Meta’s developer blog, both headsets will continue receiving security updates until the end of 2027. That gives Quest 2 owners a little over seven years of security support since the headset first launched in 2020. The Quest Pro, which arrived in October 2022, hasn’t had quite the same luck, with its support period coming in at just over five years.

And considering how expensive the Quest Pro was at launch, that’s probably going to sting a little more for anyone who bought one. The good news, however, is that Meta isn’t pulling the plug on everything. In fact, if you still enjoy putting on your Quest 2 for a quick round of Beat Saber or catching up with friends in a multiplayer VR game, you probably won’t notice much of a difference right away.

The company says it won’t deliberately disable multiplayer cross-play or prevent Quest 2 users from accessing supported games. So, if a game works on your headset today, it should keep working after March 2027, as long as it doesn’t depend on newer operating system features.

Developers can also continue releasing bug fixes, game updates, and additional content for existing titles. Even PC VR through Meta Quest Link will remain supported, which is amazing news for anyone who uses their headset with a gaming PC rather than relying entirely on standalone VR games.

There is, of course, a catch. Just because Meta isn’t stopping games from working doesn’t mean developers will keep supporting these older headsets forever. As newer VR games begin taking advantage of more powerful hardware and newer software features, Quest 2 and Quest Pro owners could gradually find themselves missing out.

Meta is at least giving users some breathing room here. Developers that discontinue support for a game must provide six months’ notice, so players shouldn’t wake up one morning to find a favorite game suddenly stopped working without warning.

Of course, security updates ending in December 2027 will eventually make continued use harder to recommend, especially for a device connected to the internet. And from January 2028 onward, developers may have even less incentive to keep older hardware in mind. Still, Meta’s approach is better than abruptly shutting down access to games people have already paid for. Your Quest 2 or Quest Pro might not have much software life left, but at least Meta isn’t forcing it into retirement just yet.
