Verizon enlisted Mike Myers earlier this year as Dr. Evil to promote its simpler wireless plans. Now, T-Mobile has called in another familiar face from television’s hall of fame. This time, it’s Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston, and he’s not cooking up anything illegal. He’s just determined to wake America up to a different kind of phone plan, even if that means bringing a rooster to work.
T-Mobile has launched a new national advertising campaign starring Cranston to promote its recently announced T-Mix plans. The 60-second commercial, titled Wake Up, debuted during Thursday Night Football on November 5.
The ad wastes little time putting Cranston to work. He barges into bedrooms, interrupts a man’s morning shave, disturbs sleeping airline passengers, and even storms through an office with a rooster in his arms. Nobody is safe from his crusade against wireless bill complacency, including internet personality Lele Pons.
The message behind the theatrics is that Americans have grown too comfortable paying for wireless plans without questioning whether they’re getting what they actually need. T-Mix challenges the usual one-size-fits-all approach with customizable benefits called Picks. Customers can choose from perks including Netflix, YouTube Premium, Apple Music, Xbox Game Pass, and Google Gemini, with the flexibility to swap eligible subscriptions every three months.
The plans start at $55, $75, and $95 per month for a single line with AutoPay, excluding taxes and fees. Each tier offers a different number of Picks, but whether that translates into savings depends on the plan, the benefits selected, and how much customers actually use them.
There’s some serious Hollywood muscle behind the silliness, too. The commercial was directed by Nick Ball, with cinematography from Oppenheimer Oscar winner Hoyte van Hoytema. T-Mobile says the campaign will expand across television, streaming platforms, movie theaters, and social media. The campaign also plans Spanish-language content starring Lele Pons.
Whether Cranston’s wake-up campaign convinces Americans to reconsider their phone bills remains to be seen. But getting Walter White and a rooster to share the screen is certainly one way to make wireless plans less boring.
