Is there any bigger hype man in mobile tech these days than Nothing CEO Carl Pei? Pei is easily one of the most visible founders around, regularly starring in videos and posting to social media, responding to creators and just being a whole lot more present in the eyes of consumers than many of his peers. Now he’s using one of those platforms to tease his company’s “first AI-native product” — and it could be here sooner than you’d think.
Over on X, Pei has published a bit of a think piece about the evolution of consumer technology, looking at how first the personal computer, and then the mobile revolution were led by business adoption, before trickling down to the masses. With AI, he thinks we’re still in that first phase, and the “killer device” that will define the true arrival of the AI hardware era is still taking shape in minds of engineers. And while that’s still probably years off, Nothing’s not wasting any time getting a head start.
According to Pei, Nothing will release an AI-native device sometime in December. While details are incredibly scant for the moment, he does offer a few tidbits:
It’s a tool, but one built with the personality and care that have come to define a Nothing product. It has no new screen, and it couldn’t have been an app.
There’s a lot in there that’s quite interesting, considering as little as it actually says. Why qualify that no-screen comment with “new” — will this work with one of the existing screens in your life?
And that “couldn’t be an app” claim feels almost proactively defensive. It’s hard to read without thinking about past AI products like the Rabbit R1 device from Humane that ended up feeling like just an app in an expensive box.
Pei suggests that Nothing’s in a prime position to help test these AI-consumer-hardware waters, leaning especially on his firm’s commitment to design, which can easily go overlooked in a tech-first hardware launch.
Finally, he shares the teaser pic you see above, showing us… a very handsome, nearly featureless corner. There’s a hint of a leather-like texture, but that’s about all we can make out from this.
So, what is this actually going to be? Nothing has reportedly been planning a major shift towards AI-first launches, with wearables and audio hardware rumored to be the company’s new priorities.
Pei mentions a context problem for AI, where we sometimes have great, fleeting ideas that we never take the time to share with an AI model, and so never manage to fully develop them. That sure feels like the sort of issue a recorder or note-taking hardware could assist with. That’s maybe the closest thing to a hint here, but this is also a hardware class that’s kind of been done to death already, with even Amazon getting in on the action.
Right now, your guess may be as good as ours. Sound off in the comments for what you think this is likely to be — or maybe share you fears for what you really hope it isn’t. Either way, we should be getting answers in just a few more weeks.
