Meta buys AI coding startup Conductor as big tech races to lock in developers
Meta is acquiring AI coding startup Conductor, which lets developers control multiple AI coding agents at the same time. According to Axios, the acquisition is meant to strengthen Meta's AI developer products. Conductor CEO Charlie Holtz confirmed the deal in a blog post but didn't disclose a price.
The acquisition fits a broader trend. Because AI models are easily interchangeable, major AI companies are buying startups that build tooling around those models. The goal is to lock developers into their own platforms. Anthropic showed how valuable these tools can be with Claude Code, which hit an annualized revenue run rate of over $2.5 billion in February alone, according to Anthropic. In May, Anthropic also acquired Stainless.
On the same day as Meta, OpenAI announced plans to acquire Pierre Computer. SpaceX closed its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor in August. Software development is one of AI's most successful use cases and also helps improve the models themselves. Conductor Cloud shuts down on November 20, and the desktop app will stop receiving new models in early 2027.
