Banks are putting up warning signs at the vault while AI companies are building new doors into it. Bank of America recently cautioned customers against sharing their banking passwords with AI assistants, even as it champions AI’s potential in banking. Meanwhile, OpenAI has already introduced financial account connections in ChatGPT, while Google’s Gemini can analyze spending through its Wallet integration. Now Anthropic is joining the money conversation, betting that Claude can help you understand your finances without touching your cash.

The company has officially unveiled Personal Finance in Claude, a feature we first spotted taking shape in September. It’s rolling out in beta this week to Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers in the US.

Rather than making you play detective across multiple banking apps, Claude brings your financial picture into one conversation. Connect your bank and credit card accounts, and you can ask where your paycheck disappeared, whether your spending has climbed, or how much breathing room remains before payday.

Claude can break expenses into categories, compare spending across months, flag duplicate charges or creeping subscription costs, and identify upcoming bills. It can even turn those numbers into customizable charts, calendars, and dashboards. However, Anthropic says it won’t touch your money.

Connections go through Plaid, meaning you authenticate directly with your bank instead of handing Claude your password. Access is strictly read-only, so the assistant cannot transfer funds, manage accounts, or make investments.

That doesn’t mean Claude sees nothing sensitive. Authorized connections expose balances, credit limits, account details, and up to two years of transactions. Anthropic says conversations inside the dedicated Personal Finance hub won’t train its models, and users can disconnect accounts whenever they wish.

There are no sponsored financial recommendations either, although Anthropic acknowledges Claude, like any other AI tool, can make mistakes and advises verifying important figures.

Claude’s latest move shows just how eager AI companies are to get a seat at your financial table. But with banks still guarding the vault, Anthropic is taking a more cautious approach by letting Claude examine your financial life without giving it the keys to your money.
